    1. This is a strange and wandering book with flashes of real brilliance. It is less like a novel and more of a glimmering fairy tale, out of A Thousand and One Knights. The story concerns six men and one women who flee the city of Kashgar in the far west of what is now China. The region is hostile, not just from the desert to the north or the Tibetan mountains to the south, but also from pillaging warlords. They hope to flee to Shanghai, but there is little chance of their arrival. Their caravan bre [...]

    2. This book picks up where The Asiatics left off thematically. The benign first person "hero" is gone. While this made it less entertaining for me,it is thematically appropriate. This novel epitomizes modernism - the epic is dead. The characters are indeed somewhat flat, but, as in The Asiatics, this is reflective of the emptiness of Western imperial culture. The people in these books should be read as extensions (inversions?) of the landscape. The beauty of the prose and its description of the sta [...]

    3. Many years ago Harlan Ellison phoned my bookshop and the talk drifted to his favorite books. This was one and he was so enthusiastic about it that he grabbed his copy and started reading a passage. I later found a copy but was underwhelmed. Perhaps my expectations were too high. I've given this a provisional ** but am resolved to reread it someday. I must have missed something.

    4. Sorry, Frederick, maybe another time but I wanted to learn about your main characters, not your opinion of the mystical state of the desert and mankind
